Bonsoir
Warmth long faded. Comfort washed with memories fleeting.
Of all previous winters, this one was most unforgiving.
A stray dog thinks as he peers into a bakery at the height of the night.
The baker and her husband share a warm loaf of bread on this cold evening.
The muffled sound of music and the scent of fresh bread reaches the stray dog.
He is reminded of a better time long forgotten.
A time of familial warmth and happiness.
Saddened by the memories the dog walks
“Bonsoir!”
A voice says.
The dog turns around to find the baker sitting there.
“It sure has been a difficult journey hasn’t it, little one?”
“Why don’t you join us with some bread?”
She says.
Hesitant at first, the dog enters the shop with the baker.
“This evening will be your last alone.”
“Welcome home! I hope you will love our bakery for years to come.”
The baker’s husband says.
This winter seems warmer than most.
I have found life in the dead of winter.
The dog thinks as he enters a new beginning.
